The metronome carries on when you leave the app or lock the phone, and the controls come with it: play, stop and the tempo by 1 or 5 BPM, from a Live Activity on iPhone and from a notification on Android.
Some tracks are genuinely ambiguous, and any detector can settle an octave away from the pulse you feel. The ½x, 1x and 2x rail under the reading moves it to the tempo you meant, and it stays there.
Tempo detection runs entirely on your phone. Your microphone audio is never recorded, uploaded, or used to build a profile. Song identification, when you use it, sends only a compact acoustic fingerprint to Apple, never the audio itself.

No. Your audio is never recorded or uploaded. Tempo detection runs entirely on your device: audio is analyzed in real time and discarded. Song identification, when you use it, sends a compact acoustic fingerprint of the sound, never the audio itself, to Apple's Shazam service to name the track. See our Privacy Policy for details.
The microphone is the app's only input: it's how MagicBPM "hears" the music to measure its tempo. Your phone will ask for permission the first time you start detection.
Get the phone a bit closer to the source, reduce background noise, and switch the capture mode to "Best accuracy" in Settings. You can also narrow the tempo range if you know roughly what to expect.

With MagicBPM Pro, songs are identified automatically as you listen and saved to your Detected Songs history with their BPM and Apple Music links. Song identification needs an internet connection.
No. Pro is a one-time purchase, handled by the App Store on iPhone and by Google Play on Android. If you reinstall or switch devices, use "Restore Purchases" to get it back.

MagicBPM runs on Mac, on iPhone, on iPad, and on Android phones, the iPhone app includes a haptic metronome for Apple Watch, and the builds share the same detection engine. Get it from the App Store or from Google Play. For the exact minimum OS version, check the store listing for your platform.
Yes, and you don't have to stop the music. Play the track out loud, from the same phone or from a speaker, and start listening in MagicBPM: it mixes in alongside whatever is already playing instead of taking the audio to itself, so Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Deezer and the rest carry on while the tempo locks in. Headphones are the one case that can't work, because the microphone has nothing to hear.
Because a lot of music is genuinely ambiguous: a track written at 140 with a half-time feel is 70 to one listener and 140 to another, and a detector has to choose. Tap ½x or 2x on the rail under the reading to move it to the octave you meant, and it stays there. Narrowing the tempo range in Settings helps too when you know roughly what to expect.
Tempo detection does. Bluetooth and car routes hand the app a lower capture rate than the built-in microphone, which MagicBPM handles properly. Song identification is switched off on CarPlay and Bluetooth hands-free routes: those microphones apply voice processing that music recognition can't see through, so it would fail rather than guess. Switch back to the phone's own microphone to name a track.
Not by importing it: MagicBPM listens through the microphone, so there is no file to load. Play the file out loud on any speaker and point the phone at it, and you get the same reading. For something you can't play out loud, tapping the beat on the metronome pad, or in the browser with tap tempo, is the fastest way to a number.
